As we have finished up the first semester of school, I hope it has been a successful time for our students in Burlington USD 244.  Parent/teacher conferences have occurred at all buildings, and some career planning discussions have started/continued at BHS.

This is a quick reminder about attendance at school and classroom/future success.  Research shows that a predictor of student success is consistent classroom attendance:

  • Studies show a direct relationship between missing at least 10 percent of classes in preschool, kindergarten or first grade and a reduction in reading proficiency by third grade.
  • There is a correlation between third-graders who are not reading at grade level and increased high school dropout rates for those students later.
  • One year of chronic absenteeism in eighth grade or during high school dramatically increases the likelihood of student dropouts before graduation, which in turn has a long-term impact of limiting employment opportunities and earning potential.

In our nation, over 6.5 million students (that is about 1 out of 7 children) missed at least 15 days of school in 2013-14.  The data nationally shows a significant spike in absenteeism in the high school grades.  Kansas ranks 26th for chronic absences.

We understand that absences can occur for a variety of reasons.  If there are concerns about your kids and their attendance, please work with building administration or counselors to determine if another problem exists.  It is so important that we all work together so our children can be successful.  Family involvement is a key ingredient to student success.

#KansansCan is our state’s vision of education with school attendance being an important part of future success.  The learning that takes place each and every day goes far beyond just reading, writing and math.  Strong work ethics, team work and social/emotional development are just a few things that occur in the framework of a normal day in Burlington USD 244.
