Principal's Message

Welcome to Burlington Elementary School web page! My name is Mrs. Long and I am excited to be part of the educational team at BES. The students, staff, families and patrons of USD 244 have demonstrated that this is a great learning community.   I am looking forward to a great school year.

About Mrs. Long

I am a proud graduate of Emporia State University.  I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in 1996 in Secondary Math Education.  My Master’s Degree is also from ESU, which I earned in 2008.  My teaching experience includes 5 years as a math & computer instructor for Jr-Sr. High Students at Peabody Burns Jr. – Sr. High School.  Following that experience my family moved back to this area, where I began teaching math at Lebo Jr.-Sr. High School.  I held this classroom position for 7 years.  In 2008, I became the Lebo Elementary Principal and in 2011, I was named K-12 Principal at Lebo Schools.

I have been married to Jesse, my husband, for sixteen years.  We have two children, Kaylee and Cody who are students here in Burlington.  Much of our spare time is centered around the activities and sports our children are involved in. As a family, we enjoy outdoor hobbies such as camping, fishing, golfing and running .  Our family’s favorite outdoor sport is snow skiing.

I truly enjoy the opportunity to work around students each and every day and enjoy the challenges they bring along with the fun, laughter and smiles they provide.  My proudest moments in education include watching 2 of my FBLA students win 1st place at the National Leadership Conference in Desktop Publishing, being part of the Lebo Elementary School staff when our school was honored with the Governor’s Award, and being named KAESP’s District 3 Principal of the Year in 2013.

About BES-

BES has approximately 300 students, creating three sections per grade level, kindergarten through 4th grade, with an average class size of 18.  Our preschool has a morning and an afternoon session and is a special needs/at risk program.  BES offers specials classes daily including music, library, and physical education. Guidance time is provided to each classroom weekly by our school counselor.  Support services are in place for students who may need them through the school-wide Title 1 Program, Reading Recovery and the MTSS model.  Our school also offers ESOL services for students as needed. BES is part of the Coffey County Special Education Cooperative and our staff includes four special education teachers, two speech pathologists, an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, a school psychologist, and a school social worker.  These professionals work to serve the needs of our students.  In addition, we are proud to say all of our teachers are highly qualified per the Kanas Department of Education requirements.

BES is proud of our 21st Century classrooms wherein technology is an important component of everyday instruction.  Every classroom is equipped with an interactive Promethean board and has 4 – 5 student computers.  Each teacher has iPads available for small group instruction and the 4th grade is launching a pilot program of classroom tablets that will be available for all students.  All these opportunities are in addition to the three computer labs used daily for whole group instruction.

BES is fortunate to have an active Parent Support Group (PSG).  The fundraising supported by this group for BES is an integral piece of some of the programs that are in place at BES such as The Great Artist.  PSG welcomes you to get involved in their organization and in our school. PSG meets monthly and all parents/guardians are encouraged to become active members of the organization.

Burlington USD #244 received a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant that allows BES to host an after-school program for students in grades K – 4.  The program begins immediately following dismissal and operates until 5:30 p.m.  For a minimal fee students are provided a safe environment wherein they have a snack, homework help, tutoring, enrichment activities, computer time using the lab and iPads, field trips that include regular visits to the Burlington Library and the elder care facilities in Burlington.

Burlington Elementary provides an excellent educational environment.   We invite you to come get involved in your child’s education and see firsthand the opportunities that students experience.
